Condensed Patterns Relevant to the Science of Complexity (Structure-Based School), Generic Design Science, and Interactive Management

Five tables Warfield developed to provide a complete overview of all of his work. The tables are: Pattern 1: Chronology: Seven Milestones in the History of Thought; Pattern 2: Milestones in the Study of Human Behavior; Pattern 3: Chronology: The Work Program of Complexity; Pattern 4: Five Indexes of Complexity; Pattern 5: The Curriculum of Complexity. A sixth pattern, Colleagues of Inheritance, is not included. This is a WIP, an unfinished paper, although 2 preliminary versions of this title have already been printed as short reports and distributed to a few colleagues. The paper consists of a set of very complicated one-page tables which Warfield plans to use in a forthcoming book. Warfield has commented that his goal has been to condense into one packet a series of tables which would give a complete overview of all the work he has been doing, in a coordinated manner that can be quickly reviewed and understood. There was an earlier version (1997) which had 4 tables with a table of contents in which each of the four tables is explained in a summary statement. CondensedPatterns98 is similar to the 1997 paper, but has 5 tables. Titles of the tables, so far, are: Pattern 1: Chronology: Seven Milestones in the History of Thought; Pattern 2: Milestones in the Study of Human Behavior; Pattern 3: Chronology: The Work Program of Complexity (filename: cow108) Pattern 4: Five Indexes of Complexity; Pattern 5: The Curriculum of Complexity. Note: There is a sixth pattern which has not yet been added to the booklet, titled Colleagues of Inheritance. Warfield used the 1997 version (with 4 tables) as a set of presentation pages, when presenting a lecture/workshop titled Managing Complexity in Capetown, South Africa, in November 1997. Tom Ryan then photocopied the 4 tables to use as part of a conference proceedings volume. But at that time the series of tables was incomplete, and they still remain a work in progress. SEE ALSO: Condensed Patterns 97 (VARIANT TITLE) IN TEXTUAL MATERIALS DATABASE. Warfield used the 1998 version (with 5 tables) as a study or discussion paper when teaching the May 1998 short course, titled Demands of Complexity, for the Institute of Public Policy at George Mason University.  (R.w. circa 2000)

NOTE: He put the paper on his web page at Public Policy, and it is still there available for viewing, at least as of July 2013 you can open Warfield's old department web page at GMU, by typing in the address bar the url: http://www.gmu.edu/depts/t-iasis/course/iasis-c.htm and when the web page opens, select the link "Condensed Patterns." There are a few typos in the tables, because the web fonts don't reproduce quite right; it is easier to just click on the Title of this database record, opening the document which was on John's computer. AND THE COMPUTER FILE IS MUCH EASIER TO READ TOO. (r.w. update, July 2013)
