Consensus Methodologies (Appendix to "Organizations and Systems Learning")

Discussion of seven methodologies used for group design. They are: Brainwriting (Ideawriting), Nominal Group Technique (NGT), Delphi, Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM), Options Field Method, Options Profile Method, and Trade-off Analysis Method (TAM). Includes description, a DELTA chart, and a graphic. See “Consensus Methodologies.”

At George Mason University Special Collections, the Finding Aid lists two Consensus Methodologies, in Box 5/23 and Box 40/17. The document in Box 5 Folder 23 is an appendix to a paper titled "Organizations and Systems Learning, 1983." It was typed by Bonnie Seitz in 1996, copied from the General Systems 1982 Yearbook. (Warfield has never proof read Bonnie's copy but she is usually accurate). See also, another record for the Consensus Methodologies Original manuscript, a document in Box 40/17 at GMU and listed in Rose Warfield's database with Record ID 1219.

The title "Consensus Methodologies" was never published as a stand-alone article but major portion of the paper was published twice in Appendices of other publications. The first publication was in the SGSR (Society for General Systems Research) Yearbook as the Appendix to Warfield’s Presidential Address to Annual Meeting of SGSR. The annual SGSR Presidential Address was customarily published in the SGSR Yearbook, of which Bela Banathy was editor. When Warfield mailed his pre-publication 59-page Presidential Address to Bela, he tossed his September 1982 Consensus Methodologies report in the same package, as an "extra item for Bela to read." (As usual, I imagine Warfield didn't take time to write any note explaining why the Consensus Methodologies was there, just expecting the recipient to figure it out.) Bela decided to use Warfield's "extra item" as an Appendix. Bela pruned off the first five pages of the original Consensus Methodologies report, then tacked the remaining 29 pages on to the end of the Warfield's Presidential Address. So there you can find Consensus Methodologies today, in General Systems Vol XXVII, 1982, Appendix pages 45-74. (SGSR Annual Meeting was in May 1983 but the Yearbook holding papers from that meeting, was backdated to 1982 the year the meeting should have been but wasn't) The last 29 pages of Consensus Methodologies was published a second time, when Warfield used them as part of his own book A Science of Generic Design, 1984. Iowa State Univ Press. (pages 454-479.). In his own book Warfield names General Systems Vol. 227, ©1982 by SGSR as a reference for materials he used. And doubtless had to write and get formal permission from Bela to do so. ========================================================================= When unpacking after Warfield died, Rose finally found Warfield's original Consensus Methodologies report from 1982, containing those 5 extra pages of introduction which Bela Banathy had not published.
