A Course in Generic Design for Engineers (1995 version)

Revised version of a course outline for a college-level class in generic design, based on courses Warfield taught at the University of Virginia in the early 1980s. Introduces the idea of "Laws" of generic design. Warfield's "Sigma 5" figure is included. See also, “Education in Generic Design” and papers with the same name from 1984 and 1985.

Warfield also taught the same material in course offerings for non-engineering students after his move to George Mason University in 1984. The paper introduces the idea of "Laws" of generic design. Warfield's "Sigma 5" figure is included. Warfield wrote this paper in 1984, and rewrote it in 1985. The 1985 article was translated into Polish and published  five years later in Warsaw in 1990 (under the title "Projektowanie Og¢lne Dla Inzynier¢w. Kursowy Wy"klad Uniwersytecki'J . It was then retranslated for publication in English, in 1995, appearing in the book "Design and Systems" a compendium of articles edited by Arnie Collen and W. Gasparski. which is now available through Google Books.  Under the title "A Course in Generic Design for Engineers" the 1995 offprint from Transactions PUblishers is in Box 20 Folder 1, Fenwick Library Warfield Collection.

(Warfield also wrote and published another paper titled "Education in Generic Design" Proceedings SGSR,1986, which has some content similar to this course for engineers, but is much shorter) R.W. circa 2000, updated 16 April 2015.
