“Discovery and Complexity” consists of a collection of 18 problematiques. The figures are from various ISM workshops done in the past. Each of the problematiques is accompanied by a full explanation and interpretation of the figure, done by Warfield. IN ADDTION THE REPORT CONTAINS TWO COMPLETE PAPERS AS APPENDICES: Appendix 1: Complexity Measurement of Systems Design, 1995 by S. M. Staley and Appendix 2: Spreadthink, 1995 by J. N. Warfield. This manuscript, printed and tape bound as an IASIS report and distributed to colleagues, was used in the January 1999 Short Course, and also given out to class members and seminar attendees in spring semester of 1999. Warfield got 20 copies printed at first, and by mid-March the supply was exhausted, so we got 20 more copies printed then. Several of the problematiques in Discovery and Complexity were planned to be used in Warfield's new book, Understanding Complexity, to be published by Kluwer (his former title was A STRUCTURE BASED SCIENCE OF COMPLEXITY, BUT HE CHANGED THE TITLE IN JANUARY 2000).
Here is a list of the figure pages, and their page numbers in the manuscript. Figures 1, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are not in the computer file text, and must be printed separately from hard copy. Figure 1. Problematique for Policy Research (Type 1) 13 Figure 2. Warfield had the idea for the book, and began collecting these figures for a book in 1998, asking his colleagues to send him copies of problematiques which had been developed from their ISM sessions. Warfield had hoped some of his old friends and colleagues would contribute, so that in time he would have a book of considerable size . But he learned, in March of 1999 (not from Aleco, but instead in an email from Chandy in India) that Aleco Christakis and/or Kevin Dye were getting out publicity on their own "First Book of Problematiques" and were collecting their own materials for the same idea. John did not receive any contributions of more problematiques from his colleagues . No Small Anthology of Problematiques with Interpretations by Warfield was ever published. However, in 2002 Warfield was able to convert all his old paper hard copies of the problematique collection in his office into PDF files. No longer would the figures have to be printed and inserted manually into each report. As PDF files they could become part of a master book manuscript. So Warfield's 18 Problematiques (still bearing the subtitle "Discovery and Complexity: A Small Anthology of Problematiques with Interpretations") now appear as Appendix 5, pages 195-235 of Warfield's book Understanding Complexity, Thought and Behavior, AJAR Publishing, Palm Harbor, Florida, 2002. There is no complete computer file for the 1999 Report, just for parts of it.. In 2009 Warfield produced another computer document to replace the 1999 report, having all or most of the 18 problematiques, but not the two papers by Scott Staley and by Warfield Warfield. Warfield's 2009 version has the title "A Variety of Problematiques." It has never been printed, or published. It is a digitized document only, and is now in Warfield Digital Collection under the 2009 title, please go to my Access ID record 1026 to see more about the 2009 version. . R.w. 8/18/2013.
