This paper was written during the time that the co-author, Dr. X. Song was a visiting scholar at George Mason University for six months from October 1999 until March 2000. He was in the U.S. on a grant from the Chinese National Academy of Science, having been sent to study under Warfield and to "learn all he could about complexity". Dr. Song had been hand-picked by Siwei Cheng to get this assignment, and when he returned to China in March 2000 he was given a second job, to head up a special office based in Beijing, dealing with complexity, under Wang Shouyang and Cheng Siwei. (Siwei thought it up I think) Warfield's comment when he read Dr. Song's paper, was that he thought it was excellent, and also that Xuefeng had done almost all the writing of the paper himself, with Warfield not needing to change any of the content, only to review and correct it for minor editing of Xuefeng's English. Xuefeng's writing was based on what he had learned from reading materials which Warfield provided for him, plus conferences with Warfield to discuss the materials. When he submitted the paper for publication in China, the title was changed, and the published version (in Box 21, Folder 51) is "The Comparison Among the Schools of Science of Complexity." This, the original paper, is not quite the same as the published version, Warfield says. IN 2007, when he was teaching his Sheffield Alabama short course "Systems Science in a University Setting" Warfield used both of Xuefeng's papers as handouts. Dr. Song is just a lovely person, a very brilliant, sensitive, careful and extremely likeable young man. He was by far the best of the Chinese scholars who studied under Warfield.
