Field Representation of Factors Affecting Innovation in Ford: The Case of Direct Engineering

An analysis of management system known as “Direct Engineering.” Consists primarily of a three-page table (a Field Representation). Composed as a review of a Ford Motor Company report “Direct Engineering /University of Michigan Innovation Decision-Making Study.” See also, “Ford Motor Attributes Re Innovation.”

This is a manuscript containing mostly a gigantic 3-page table, (a FIELD) in which the management system known as "direct Engineering" is analyzed. Warfield prepared the table for Pete Seferro at Ford at the time in summer of 1998 that Pete was interested in pursuing the idea of "Direct Engineering" at Ford. Warfield prepared this document as a review of a company report (titled “Direct Engineering /University of Michigan Innovation Decision-Making Study”) done by one of Pete's subordinates. Warfield was trying to critique the report and bring it to a point usable for further work plans. There is a companion document Warfield did at the same time titled "Ford Motor Attributes Re Innovation." Pete's boss had been enthusiastically promoting Pete's project. Unfortunately, soon after Warfield finished this Field Representation document, Pete's boss got an early retirement from Ford, and was replaced with a manager who was not interested in direct engineering and had no idea of what it was all about and so the project stopped immediately on it. Nothing else was done with Warfield's work on this matter. He just put it away in the filing cabinet.
