This document is an outline of Invited lecture presented on PictureTel from George Mason University to ITESM (Mexico) faculty and students, March 13, 1997,[Mexican title is: ISM Software] This talk was a follow on to some lectures Warfield did at a conference in Toluca, Mexico, in 1997, where PictureTel was used to broadcast the conference to other colleges in a network. The Mexicans had a lot of PictureTel equipment and asked Warfield if he would like to try an international hookup using this technology, by giving another talk, long-distance, from the U.S. to Mexico. After returning to the U.S., Warfield was able to make connections with some video-telephone broadcast facilities at George Mason University, where they were willing to try a connection from the GMU campus to the ITESM receiving station in Mexico City. The video transmission took place from Enterprise Hall at GMU, using facilities donated by the Graduate Business Institute, and the lecture donated by John Warfield, with technical assistance from Mr. Tim Huff, of the Graduate School of Business. The talk was presented live on 13 March 1997, and was viewed by Prof. Juan Lira's Structural Modeling of Systems Class, at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico. There was a lot of doubt whether the international hookup of the two systems would succeed, but the transmission was successful in spite of the technicians being able to hook up only one telephone wire when the standard connection is supposed to be two wires. The Mexicans preserved the talk on tape, or something, and Warfield has given permission for ITESM to use the video talk in future distance learning classes. We expect that sooner or later we can get a copy of the video for our files. A videotape copy (or some kind of electronic copy?) is at Universidad Virtual, Instituto Tecnologico & de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico.
