Managing Complexity

This is “Condensed Patterns Relevant to the Science of Complexity (1997)” under a different name. Presented at International Systems Thinking Conference and Workshops, University of Capetown, 4-7 November 1997. See also, “Condensed Patterns Relevant to the Science of Complexity (Structure-Based School), Generic Design Science, and Interactive Management (1998).”

"Managing Complexity," the 1997 proceedings paper, is really Warfield's "Condensed Patterns 1997" with another name. GMU DOES NOT HAVE THIS 1997 PAPER, which was a working paper and only a precursor to a later, longer Condensed Patterns 1998. Warfield did not learn until after his arrival in Capetown that Professor Tom Ryan wanted a paper to print in a conference Proceedings. Warfield did not have a fully prepared academic manuscript for this talk. However, in lieu of a formal paper, he gave Tom the 6-page booklet CONDENSED PATTERNS RELEVANT TO THE SCIENCE OF COMPLEXITY which he had prepared as handout for his Capetown audience. Tom, as editor of the Proceedings, gave those 6 pages a new title: "Managing Complexity". He issued the photocopies as pages 93-100 of his Proceedings. It was not a printed volume. The pages of the proceedings were not numbered; Warfield wrote page numbers for his own proceedings volume by hand. Names of the tables in the Proceedings paper: Pattern 1: Chronology: Seven Milestones in the History of Thought; Pattern 2: Milestones in the Study of Behavioral Pathologies; Pattern 3: Chronology: The Work Program of Complexity; Pattern 4: Five Indexes of Complexity
