Managing the Unmanageable: Abstracts of PowerPoint Presentations

Abstracts for lectures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13 and 14, nine of which were made into videos in year 2000. See notes field for a list of the titles.

Sent to GMU 31 January 2001. Abstracts for lectures 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,10, 13 and 14, nine of which were made into videos in year 2000. Warfield first wrote the abstracts to accompany his BOOK MANUSCRIPT of “A Structure Based Science of Complexity: Transforming Complexity into Understanding,” with the thought that IF Kluwer Publishers decided to publish his book then these PowerPoint presentations could be published and distributed along with the book, as a teaching tool for persons who wanted to buy the book for their classes. He sent copies of the abstracts to Kluwer in May, 2000 hoping it would encourage them to decide to publish. [NOTE: Kluwer did not publish his book because Warfield would not give them the copyright. He withdrew the manuscript, eventually changed the title to Understanding Complexity: Thought and Behavior, and published it himself as the first book produced by Warfield's AJAR Publishing Company] The ten abstracts in this document are summaries of ten PowerPoint slides shows on home computer, in file folder MTU2000. Printouts of the slides were donated to George Mason University Warfield Special Collection. Warfield made 9 video lectures based on these slides shows, but he has not donated the videos as yet because the series is not complete. Fourteen videos are planned in all. May 25, 2000 the date on which he stopped writing and started packing the office books for moving to Florida marked the end of the MTU2000 slides. He says he might do more work on the slides for the remaining lectures after retirement. R.W. January 2001.

This is a list of all 14 titles planned for the series: Managing the Unmanageable: Process Leadership Filename MTU#01; Managing the Unmanageable: Interactive Management Process Leaders in Organizations. Computer filename MTU#02; Managing the Unmanageable: Thought Leaders on Behavioral Pathologies, MTU#03; Managing the Unmanageable: The Mathematics of Structure, MTU#04; Managing the Unmanageable: Discovery in Organizations, MTU#05 [Changed later to "Metrics of Complexity"]; Managing the Unmanageable: ????? Not finished yet, will be MTU#06; Managing the Unmanageable: Thought Leaders on Second Order Thought, MTU#07; Managing the Unmanageable: ????? Not finished yet, will be MTU#08; Managing the Unmanageable: Infrastructure for the Work Program of Complexity, MTU#09; Managing the Unmanageable: Why Johnny Can't Design Software, MTU#10; Managing the Unmanageable: ????? Not finished yet, will be MTU#11; Managing the Unmanageable: ????? Not finished yet, will be MTU#12; Managing the Unmanageable: Managerial Self-Delusion via Killer Assumptions, MTU#13; Managing the Unmanageable: Structuring Discursivity for the Domain of Complexity, MTU#14.

ADDED NOTE: Since the year 2000 Warfield has been working on some more PowerPoint files for the Managing the Unmanageable series. I think he now has about 20 different lectures figured out, but not videotaped yet. One big problem is that here in Alabama there is no adequate television studio for the filming. “Managing the Unmanageable” - or the acronym “MTU” - has become an umbrella phrase used by Warfield for all his POWER POINT TEACHING MATERIALS, not only for video lectures, but also slide presentations & hard copy such as printed booklets of PowerPoint slides.
