ANNOTATION: The 1996/1997 paper is a review of the intellectual history presaging the development of the Interactive Management adaptation and use of structural graphics to display results of IM Workshops. Warfield began on this paper possibly in 1994, but did most of the writing of it during the spring & summer of 1996, completing a final draft in August 1996. In the paper, Warfield gives credit to Aleco Christakis and Hasan Osbekan for the word "Problematique." Warfield used information given to him by Aleco about the term "Problematique," a word which Christakis had always used to describe the Warfield ISM structures.

Warfield had spent a lot of time on it, and had enjoyed writing it and researching it, but concluded that it would never see the light of day thanks to the misunderstanding with Ozbekhan. Well, I was wrong. During the next year there was further correspondence between Warfield and Ozbekhan, possibly about the missing pages. Ozbekhan eventually decided that he was not being usurped after all. In early 1997 Warfield resuscitated the article, printed it as an IASIS Report and sent copies around to several colleagues. Also the paper became one of the group of seven manuscripts which Warfield included in his IASIS monograph titled "1997 Essays on Complexity (Mid-Year Edition)" which he assembled and printed in June 1997. In this monograph it is on pages 105-138.

Also in June 1997 Warfield submitted the paper to Systems Research & Behavioral Science journal. In September 1997 Editors at the journal finished the first round of referee reviews and asked that Warfield revise the manuscript using suggestions from the referees which involved several changes to the original. Warfield decided to rewrite the paper again to meet the referee's requirements, and this time he asked a PH.D. student, Tony Perino, to do the work of revising, and to be co-author. In these revisions the paper's original content was so greatly reduced as to make it a completely different article, furthermore Tony added extra material which altered it still more. In 1998 Tony's revised paper was resubmitted and was accepted for publication by Systems Research. The Systems Research version is now cataloged separately as: THE PROBLEMATIQUE: EVOLUTION OF AN IDEA, (1998) by John N. Warfield and George H. Perino, Jr.
