The Science of Generic Design: Foundations and Applications

This is simply a two-page summary of a lengthy talk during which Warfield showed a few transparencies on an overhead projector, and also handed out some printed transparencies of additional materials. The talk outline covers not only Warfield's own 30 minute presentation, (titled A Philosophy of Design) but an entire morning session which he coordinated, consisting of videos and talks by Roxana Cardenas, Scott Staley, & Lynn Sullivan. For further information on the talk, see “A Philosophy of Design.” For the transparencies used, see “Understanding Design Science.” Presented at the 1st Annual Meeting of the International Society for Design and Process Science, University of Texas, IC2 Center, Austin, Texas, 9 December 1995.

"The Science of Generic Design: Foundations and Applications", was a plenary presentation at the First Annual Meeting of the International Society for Design and Process Science, University of Texas, IC2 Center, Austin, Texas, December 9,1995. The talk outline covers not only Warfield's own 30 minute presentation, (titled A Philosophy of Design) but an entire morning session which he coordinated, consisting of videos and talks by Roxana, Scott Staley, & Lynn Sullivan. TO SEE THE PAPER ON WHICH HIS 30 MINUTE TALK WAS BASED, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE REPORT TITLED: "A PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGN" (phw18). TO SEE THE TRANSPARENCIES TO GO WITH HIS 30 MINUTE TALK, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE REPORT TITLED "UNDERSTANDING DESIGN SCIENCE" (scw026).

Warfield's 30 minute talk was not published in the conference Proceedings because it was not a conference paper, rather it was a keynote address presented at the beginning of a plenary session titled: "Twenty-seven Years of Research on Complexity, Applied to a Science and Practice of Design of Complex Systems" during which papers given by Scott Staley, Roxana Cardenas and Lynn Sullivan were also part of the presentation. His separately bound Report titled "A Philosophy of Design, 1995" (Phw018) was printed before the conference and was used as a handout at the plenary session. It contains an in depth discussion of the ideas presented by Warfield in his talk. Not knowing beforehand the exact schedule or format for the plenary session, Warfield had a large number of transparencies available in Austin, but did not use all of them in his talk. After the talk, several persons asked to see more of them, so about a month later he assembled all of the transparencies as a 51-page booklet with the title "Understanding Design Science, 1996" (Scw026) and mailed the booklet to persons requesting it. Although they are companion reports, the two booklets have different dates, because Warfield finished and issued the PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGN monograph in December 1995, while he did not assemble all of the transparencies and print under the title UNDERSTANDING DESIGN SCIENCE until January 1996.
