Systems Engineering

One of the first articles Warfield published. Provides an overview of the systems engineering, a new field at the time. Warfield considered this report an important step in his understanding of complexity and Systems Science. Written for Contract NORD7958, Bureau of Ordinance, U.S. Navy Department.

This was a report written for Contract NORD7958, Bureau of Ordinance, U.S. Navy Department. Warfield was encouraged to write this by Art Thompson, who was his boss at Penn State University Ordinance Research Lab, where Warfield worked on this contract part time while also working as an instructor at Penn State University. The original which was spiral-bound was 8 1/2 x 11, 24p. We have one copy of the original, very old, and some Xerox copies of the original report in the home file cabinet. The U.S. Commerce Department's NTIS (National Technical Information Service) did a reprint which is available today from National Technical Information Service, Springfield, Virginia 22161 (Tel. 703-487-4650 Forty years after their days at Penn State Art and Warfield had the opportunity to meet again. Art had become Dean of College of Engineering at Boston University. Warfield was in Boston that year to attend the Charles S. Peirce conference in Cambridge. Art and his wife, Ginny took us to dinner at the Harvard Club in Boston. It was a happy time for all. Arthur T. Thompson had been the project director for a Navy Contract at ORL (Ordinance Research Lab) on the Penn State Campus. Warfield had been a young instructor, in his first job at Penn State’s Electrical Engineering Department. To make ends meet Warfield also got part time consulting work at ORL, where Art encouraged him to write a paper about Systems Engineering. The report was extremely well received, got widespread distribution and eventually was reprinted by U.S. Dept of Commerce, Warfield has said of Art many times “He was the best boss I ever had.” Art had been pivotal to Warfield’s career by steering him to produce that report. It was one of the earliest published papers written by Warfield and was seminal to his later work in systems science.
