Systems Planning for Environmental Education

This article contains one of the earliest mentions of Warfield's Options Field in a formal publication. Options Field/Options Profile methodology was used as part of the design work done for an environmental education project. .

ABSTRACT:  "The development of citizen capacity to function from a systems perspective on major public issues is needed to combat the politics of selfishness’ as practiced through single-issue political action groups.  Environmental education offers an opportunity to develop citizenship functions through the challenge set forth in the Environmental Education Act of 1970.  Systems methodologies have been developed that offer the possibility of citizen learning and doing through participative effort.  Examples of the use of various systems methodologies relate to defining environmental education, exploring core themes for use in environmental education, classroom learning, and acceptance in field testing of methodology.  Design of a regional environmental learning system (RELS) offers another opportunity to apply systems methodology.  A general methodology for conceptual design of systems can be readily applied to public design of environmental learning systems."

I have found that I have copies of three versions of this paper on Warfield home computer, but only my scan of the ORIGINAL PROCEEDINGS volume paper displays a real Options Profile. The published IEEE journal version of this diagram is not correct.   I believe the proceedings as well as journal articles to be technically copyrighted by IEEE, but since the published IEEE figure is wrong, I decided to display my original scan with the only version of OPTIONS PROFILE that I know to be correct, from my home computer. I can't be sure any other version is right even in a World Cat library. (r.w. January 21, 2018)

The article also appears, as Appendix 2, in a government contract report: Designs for the Future of Environmental Education, Final Report Vol. 1, which was submitted to the U.S. Office of Environmental Education, Dept. of Health, Education & Welfare, in July 1980. (OEE report is on microfiche, the Appendix 2 was removed prior to filming, due to copyright restrictions, so this paper is not available through that channel)
