User’s Guide to the GMU Version of ISM for Windows

User guide to Interpretive Structural Modeling software for Windows. This User guide is now available as a free download from the jnwarfield.com website, using the URL http://www.jnwarfield.com/software/ism/ism.zip.

Warfield paid part of Benjamin Broome's salary for the spring and fall semesters of 1997, and in return Broome was to write a User Guide for the Windows software. Which he did, bringing this draft to Warfield in late 1997. The document is quite good since Broome has been using the software for about 4 years, and is familiar with all of its quirks. Broome copied a lot of the material for this guide from the ISMDOS guide which had been written several years earlier, using same format and style,  as the writers of the DOS GUIDE. Also Ben Broome placed several notes throughout on how to deal with the bugs which still remain in the software. One major deficiency in Broome's Guide is lack of instructions on how to print when using the ISM Windows software. Alas, the software itself has never been updated, although Warfield was trying to get Broome interested in doing so, possibly collaborating with Mr. Ma on a Version 2 which would eliminate the bugs. Ben's draft is quite well done, except that Appendix D is missing. Appendix D was to be a set of drawings or figures displaying the different types of structural maps. Broome did not include these, saying he would provide them later. Prof. Broome has made a carefully detailed description of each of the software bugs, and on 18 Nov. 1997 when giving the document to Warfield, Broome asked that we send a copy to Mr. Dangsheng Ma, in hopes that Mr. Ma could be persuaded to make corrections to the software in order to get rid of the bugs. So Rose Warfield made extra copies, and mailed one to Dangsheng on 19 Nov 1997. Dangsheng had by then graduated and left the university, moving to his new job in Greensboro, NC. Broome hoped that Dangsheng might have time or interest in removing the bugs.  User guide has been made available as a free download. with hopes for add-ons and updates at some time in the future.  (R.w. 2009, updated 24 Feb 2014.)
