The Work Program of Complexity: From Origins to Outcomes

An early draft of what would later be published as Understanding Complexity: Thought and Behavior.

I have a computer file (buk002) in which the title page is dated 1995. BUT Warfield's hard copy printout of this book has 1997 as the date on the title page, and in Warfield's old computer files he lists the title as "The Work Program of Complexity First Draft 1997" (. So it looks as if he wanted it to be a 1997 book when sending it out for review. I think he did send it out to several colleagues, but I don't know when, or to whom, at least not now. Warfield said (when I asked him about it in Jan 2001) that he had stopped writing THE WORK PROGRAM OF COMPLEXITY because he had come to the conclusion that he had the wrong conceptual basis - and that somehow it just didn't seem to "work." He said that later on he started in again, on something called NewWPOC, a document in which he wrote two new chapters, to use as the beginning of a revision of this book. He said that after he finally got these two new chapters finished, he was able to use WORK PROGRAM OF COMPLEXITY by ADDING IT into the mid-section of the new book, which he decided to call A STRUCTURE-BASED SCIENCE OF COMPLEXITY. He remarked "after I got those first two chapters written, the rest of the book came easy" Much of the material which went into the book was printed and distributed earlier as separate monographs, papers, classroom handouts, and the like. This wordperfect document which I have (buk002) has a computer glitch between pages 151 and 153, which crashes the software. To get to the last half of the book hit control-End, which will bring you to page 316, then go backward to p 153, line 138, where the glitch ends. I used to know how to get the glitch out, but forgot, and too busy to figure it out again now. Probably a hidden code somewhere which has to be removed. The "Work Program of Complexity" document is all OUTDATED now, anyhow, having been superseded first by "A STRUCTURE BASED SCIENCE OF COMPLEXITY," AND FINALLY BY HIS NEW TITLE FOR THE BOOK TO BE USED IF IT GETS PUBLISHED AT LAST, IN 2001, WHICH IS "UNDERSTANDING COMPLEXITY" (r.w. circa 2000)
