Types of Relationships and Examples of Each Type

A table that has appeared in multiple articles including “Universal Priors, Draft #1” and “Structural Thinking: Organizing Complexity Through Disciplined Activity.” The table has six vertical columns, captioned: Definitive, Comparative, Influence, Temporal, Spatial and Mathematical. In each column are suggested terms to use in creating a relational statement.

This table was printed as Table 1 in Warfield's unpublished paper Universal Priors appearing in Draft #1 of the manuscript which he completed January 1988. This January manuscript is quite a bit different from an August 1988 article of the same title, and the August 1988 article does not have this table in it. But the January 1988 paper at least identifies that the table was produced by Warfield in 1988, or earlier. This table was published as Table 3 in the Systems Research journal article titled Structural Thinking: Organizing Complexity Through Disciplined Activity (1996) by Warfield and Staley. The table was used again in a paper written in 2001 titled Three Domains of Complexity where it is given a slightly different title, as "Table 7: Six Categories of Relationships." There are six vertical columns, captioned: Definitive, Comparative, Influence, Temporal, Spatial and Mathematical. In each column are suggested terms to use in creating a relational statement. Table is a pdf download, as pre-publication copy in the article available from publisher at DOI number given above.
