This is the transcript of a guest lecture to a Systems Design class taught by Dr. Antonio Rios. John Warfield presented the lecture by satellite television from Tampa, Florida to the class on the ITESM campus in Chihuahua, Mexico, 29 October 2001. Warfield had prepared a set of five PowerPoint slides titled MTU # 30: Interactive Management but only three of the slides appear in the English language transcript. To our surprise, in March 2009, eight years after he gave this lecture, Warfield received a copy of this English language transcript from Wan Jianping, a colleague at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China.
We don’t know how the transcript reached China. The entire class session had been videotaped in Mexico in 2001, later edited by Dr. Rios at ITESM into an 80 minute video titled Diseno Y Practica de Sistemas and broadcast from ITESM Virtual University TV.
Perhaps JianPing or one of his students made the transcript while watching the video. Or maybe the Mexicans did a transcript. We just don't know. We are sure of the date, because Rose made complete records of the 2001 satellite transmission. Warfield's lecture was done at a studio in Tampa, Florida, (The Whitlock Group, 7886 Woodland Center Boulevard, Tampa, Florida 33614) and transmitted in real time by satellite or phone connection of some sort to Dr. Rios in Chihuahua. Wan Jianping’s transcript sent from China eight years afterward contains only three PowerPoint slides from the original MTU#30 Power Point slide show which has 5 PowerPoint slides: 1) Title slide 2) Interactive Management Support Structure- 3) Management of Complexity Support Structure- 4) SYSTEMS SCIENCE Support Structure- 5) Where to Learn More. This was one of the PowerPoints which John hoped might be made into a video lecture for his MTU2000 VIDEO LECTURE series, but it never happened.
In the transcript sent by Wan Jianping, Warfield used only Slides 1, 2 and 5.
Warfield’s copy of the video is in Special Collection Box 96, Folder 2, having been donated to George Mason University in September 2007. This transcript received in 2009 is not stored with the video cassette, since it arrived so much later, but remains on Rose’s computer as a digitized copy.
