This is a single cassette tape, informally called "Demo Tape 1" or "The Excerpts Tape." Full title of the cassette is: "Excerpts from Interactive Management Workshop: Design of a Ford Motor Company Product Information Management System (PIMS), Dearborn Michigan, January 11-14, 1994." It is a 1997 video adaptation - using cutaways from workshop tapes first filmed in 1994. The excerpts were drawn from videos produced by Ford’s video team. The workshop was organized by Scott M. Staley, Ph.D. while working in Ford Research Laboratories.
Rose Warfield copied the excerpts from the original tapes, and pasted together the demo videotape in 1997 for JohnWarfield to use in a speech at a Falls Church meeting of some science group or other. At first Rose titled the videotape DEMO TAPE 1, but later changed it to
"EXCERPTS FROM FORD PIM WORKSHOP." These excerpts are real scenes directly from the workshop, showing progress of the work just as it occurs in real time. Nothing has been altered or cut from any of the segments, most of which are quite short. There is one lengthy final segment when participants give Round Robin comment on their opinions and reactions to the IM methodology.
Shorter edited versions of the demonstration video were considered, but not ever done, due to the expense. However we finally concluded that this demonstration tape is considerably more honest and accurate portrayal of Interactive Management than would be possible with any edited prettified 15 minute tape, so we left the scenes exactly as first filmed, in Dearborn, in 1994.
A four-page guide to the Excerpts (written by Rose) along with a copy of the Demo videotape cassette was sent to China in September 1997, with Mr. Qu Duan. He took them to be used as part of the presentations in John's 1997 lecture tour. Mr. Qu Duan left early with the tapes in his luggage, to show ahead of time. John and Rose were to follow to China a couple of weeks later. John got a bad bronchitis episode in September October of 1997, and he had to cancel his lecture tour. Iy was nearly a year later that Warfield finally went to China for a July 1998 lecture tour. However he did not use the demonstration tape in the 1998 lectures, because Qu Duan was not there, because John's time was limited, and frankly because we had forgotten about the video, even to inquire. So, one copy of Demo Tape 1 videotape is still in China somewhere or wherever Qu Duan left it.
In January of 1999 another copy of this videotape was given to a visitor from Taiwan, Mr. Ming-Shen Wang, (now a professor at Sun Yat Sen Univ, he was doing graduate studies under Roger Stough at GMU in 1998-99)
ABOUT THE DVD VERSION:
Note that a DVD recording of the tape also exists under a separate record. The DVD version is an exact copy of the Demo Tape created by Rose in 1997. The DISK copy was made in December 2003 when Rose got a new video-to-DVD machine, and converted the old Demo Tape to her first DVD disk. The DVD version is labeled and cataloged in Rose's Access database with this title: "Excerpts from Interactive Management Workshop: Design of a Ford Motor Company Product Information Management System (Pims)." At GMU Library, in the Warfield Special Collection finding aid it is listed as: "DVD Recording: Excerpts From Interactive Management Workshop 1994 (Box 81 , Folder 8 )"
John has given the DVD to several visitors and colleagues, but Rose failed to make a record of who got the copies, so can't positively name all the names. Tom Warfield, Ray Evans Harrell, David Gray & Nancy, and Special Collections & Archives at GMU got copies, but other people did also. I think John also gave a copy to Steve Krane, of Parker-Hannifin Corporation, Aerospace Group who came in March 2007 to find out about Interactive Management with view of putting on a company workshop. John gave Mr. Krane some names of U.S. and Mexican people who might help him and Carmen Moreno is going to help the workshop, I think it is to be in Minnesota. John Warfield spent time with Mr. Krane talked to him for hours before and after lunch, collected a lot of papers for him to study, and probably gave him the Demo Tape DVD as well.
At Warfield Special Collection in GMU’s Fenwick Library there four textual documents describing the January 1994 workshop:
