This paper is an assessment of the nature of environmental problems in the developing countries, using a general systems theory framework. The increasing magnitude of environ. problems in the developing countr ies is due primarily to the interactive effects of poverty, underdevel opment, high growth rate of urbanization, population growth, and low l evels of literacy.. and is made more complex by simultaneous presence of two paradoxical classes of environmental problems arising out of: l) Development Projects.... and 2)Lack of Development.
