Abstract: A sense of contest and struggle permeates everyday life in Greece to a degree that is uncharacteristic of the Western orientation to interpersonal communication. The verb 'palevome' is used to illum inate the Greek perspective on conflict and its role in interaction. Traditional cultural roots of palevome are discussed in sections that focus on ingroup and outgroup distinctions, relations with outgroup me mbers, and the importance of 'philotimo.' The role of 'couvenda' and the existence of competition in interpersonal communication and relati onships are examined in terms of the influence of these concepts.
