In PROCEEDINGS ASEE Annual Conference (1988) five pages.  This paper sets out to illuminate the context of engineering design in society. Various ways in which the practise of "designing" can be abstracted to formulate a "theory about designing" are discussed. It proceeds to show the current developments in a comprehensive theory about engineering design that is based on practical experience coupled with contemplative speculation.
