We are classifying this as an IM REPORT.
Patkar gave this paper at National Seminar on Application of GIS for Solving Environmental Problems, organized by Technical Teachers Training Institue and Canada-India Institutional Cooperation Project, Chennai 600113, India, August 6-8, 1997.
Environmental degradation is now assuming alarming proportion, particularly, in rapidly developing areas. Selective efforts for solid waste disposal, controlling air, water, and noise pollution and preservation of forests and green spaces are no doubt pursued, but, the need is to undertake a systematic and comprehensive programme to manage wide ranging environmental issues. A geographic information system (GIS) which facilitates integrated alaysis of spatial and attribute data can play a central role in organizing such a management system. However, for successful implementation and relizing the full potential of GIS, a proper design strategy is necessary. In this paper, a methodology drawn from the generic design science is presented to address that need.
