Effective Representations of Hierarchical Structures, Research Report No.8.

Summary: Pending
This is a scanned copy of a photocopy of the original report, but still readable. On this copy John has made a few handwritten notations. This is the longer, fuller report, has more detail than the published IEEE:SMC version. This 1979 report by a team of Japanese researchers is an extension of the theory outlined in Warfield's 1977 paper "Crossing Theory and Hierarchy Mapping." (A copy of Warfield's paper is attached to the report, in our files.) The Japanese researchers discuss the software developed in their Institute which is capable of handling 500 elements. In 1981, an edited version of this 29-page Fujitsu Insitute report was published in an IEEE journal under the title "Methods for Visual Understanding of Hierarchical System," IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics v11 n2, February (1981) 109-125. . Both the 1979 report and the 1981 journal artice are in the IASIS file. Warfield has cited and quoted from the work of these Japanese researchers, in his 1990 book A SCIENCE OF GENERIC DESIGN.
