This Saginaw Steering Pump report was about data exchange between Ford and GM and Texas Instruments and United Technologies. Pete Sferro of the Alpha unit was the one who was assigned to run Ford Motor CompanyÔÇÖs part of the RRM contract. Under Pete was Ken Heubner, Scott StaleyÔÇÖs boss, and it was Ken who signed off on this, you can see his signature and date at the bottom of the cover page although John says probably most of the report was written by Scott Staley. The Ford contribution to the RRF consortium data exchange included an IM Workshop conducted in March 1994 and documented in a report by Scott Staley titled RRM GENERAL DESIGN PROCESS VERSION 1.0.
RRM, or Rapid Response Manufacturing was a U.S. government project to improve design capabilities in American industry, to compete with Japan where companies worked together, shared information and were successful on a national scale. The RRM consortium was an attempt by the U.S. government to get American companies to cooperate in a similar fashion. Over 40 million dollars in matching funds went as grant money to the four participating companies. John says his work with the RRM project was just at the beginning of the consortium, working with Scott in that 1994 RRM workshop and he did not do any more, having finished his formal contracts with Ford at the end of 1994. John doesnÔÇÖt know if the RRM consortium is still continuing or not.
