Abstract The incessant operation of MoorÔÇÖs law is offering new technological products at a pace that is posing a challenge to the library and information science profession. The evolving variety in the means of information production and dissemination demands new approaches for both information and library management. Evidently, innovation in library service is the key for addressing this emerging challenge. The aid of the systems approach is suggested in this regard. One of its models under a framework of the generic design science is illustrated here. It identifies the major operational dimensions of a modern library and suggests appropriate actions to meet the varied requirements. The other model, namely, the balanced scorecard method measures the library performance in a comprehensive manner and thereby guides the improvement process. Supporting actions for information sharing, education and practice are further outlined. Keywords: Balanced scorecard, generic design science, information management, learning, library management, systems approach
