================================================
The DOS software is a a version written for use on a desktop PC. Although not "user friendly" and now supplemented by Windows versions, this ISM program continues to work efficiently as designed. It has the disadvantage that it is not possible to print graphics from it. Facilitators use lists of the results of the ISM SESSIONS to produce and display charts manually.

ABOUT INTERPRETIVE STRUCTURAL MODELING SOFTWARE (ISM SOFTWARE)
Interpretive Structural Modeling was invented by Dr. John N. Warfield at the Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio, USA in the period 1971-1973.
The first publication dealing with ISM was the Battelle Monograph No. 4 by John N Warfield: Structuring Complex Systems, April, 1974.
The first full-size book dealing with ISM was the following:
John N. Warfield, Societal Systems: Planning, Policy, and Complexity,
New York: Wiley Interscience, 1976.
The first ISM software was developed at Battelle in 1973-74 in Fortran IV and early tests were at the Kettering Foundation, Dayton, Ohio, and the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, in the same time frame.
Many versions of ISM software were written later by different organizations in several different languages.
The GMU PC version was written around 1987-88, and has been in use for many years since that time at a variety of locations.
The developers did not produce a users' guide. When Dr. Warfield decided to work on a book called A HANDBOOK OF INTERACTIVE MANAGEMENT in 1989, he decided that he would write a users' guide that would be very detailed and would walk the user through the three main ISM commands: DOMODEL, DOCLUS, and DOPRIOR. This document became Appendix 2 (pages 235-274) in A HANDBOOK OF INTERACTIVE MANAGEMENT, and users may consult this HANDBOOK to read the guide. Users who don't have the HANDBOOK can download it free of charge by going to www.jnwarfield.com/pdf/HIM/HIM.zip.
Dr. Warfield decided to put the Appendix 2 on this disk. Some users will be able to print it directly. Some may have a problem printing from the disk. This may be because the Appendix 2 contains several figures that were prepared in the Micrografx DRAW program and imported into Word Perfect software. Some printers may not print this material.
Dr. Warfield prints it on a HP LaserJet III which has a Pacific Page Postscript cartridge installed. Some users may be able to print it without Postscript, if they properly arrange their print commands. The fallback is to go to the HANDBOOK.
