This paper was written at about the same time as Warfield was preparing a seminar talk to the GMU faculty. It has many similarities this talk, which was titled “The Great University.” However while the seminar talk deals specifically with university curriculum and planning, this "Essay on Complexity" article is more general in nature. It contains quite a bit of added material, such as an abstract, end notes and a table titled: "Data Relevant to Indices of Complexity." It has no mention at all of the term "The Great University". It is not known whether Warfield wrote this before or after the seminar, but we would guess that both papers progressed simultaneously. On 9 September 1995 he sent copies of an article titled "An Essay on Complexity" to several faculty members at George Mason University. However I don't know if it was this article, or simply a copy of his similar seminar talk. Warfield says he doesn't remember which of the two articles was sent to the faculty. It was certainly this two-column version which he sent by FAX to Michael McMaster, on 27 September 1995, and in an accompanying note made the comment: "I'm still trying to say things in a simpler way, but it's tough." This article was printed up as an IASIS monograph, in a tape bound pamphlet, and distributed to anyone who asked for it, until we ran out of copies. Since it was in a two-column format, Rose Warfield wonders if Warfield might have prepared it to send to Bill Livingston, but not sure about that.
