Clanthink Assures Institutionalized Mediocrity

Discusses Clanthink and its effects on organizations and group processes. Originally titled “Clanthink Assures Institutionalized Mediocrity” and sent to Short Circuit: The Newsletter of Engineering Empowerment for publication.

The original title was "Clanthink Assures Institutionalized Mediocrity" and it was written and sent to Bill Livingston, editor of the Newsletter, in November 1993. Livingston changed the title to “Clanthink: Assured Institutionalized Mediocrity." There is a misprint in the newsletter, in one paragraph, when the word "groupthink" is printed, rather than the original manuscript version which uses the word "clanthink." Warfield has marked this correction in our copy of the printed newsletter. The first paragraph begins: "Suppose you wanted to make it possible for an organization (a corporation, a university, a city government, a state or federal government) to be as mediocre as it can be. How would you go about it?"
