Content-Oriented Resources. Volume VI of A Sourcebook for the Design of a Regional Environmental Learning System. [Project title: Development of an Interpretive Structural Model and Strategies for...]

Reports possible methods for integrating environmental education into existing public school curricula. Proposes a technique called "piggy-backing" by which environmental education may be integrated into existing curricula with none or very little increase in teacher workloads and per pupil cost. Examples of integration include discussion for eighth-grade mathematics. Specific mathematics problem sets are described which deal with energy and environmental issues. [Project title: Development of an Interpretive Structural Model and Strategies for Implementation Based on a Descriptive and Prescriptive Analysis of Resources for Environmental Education/Studies. Contract #300-700-4028] ANNOTATION This is Volume 6 of a 6-volume set of reference reports written for the U. S. Office of Environmental Education under a contract supervised by Walter J. Bogan. Robert Waller's problem set for math education is the first part of Volume 6, followed by Alexander Christakis' proposal of a study of human settlements as an arena for environmental education. Warfield's paper on knowledge organization is next, followed by a description of a set of teacher training materials focused on energy and land use developed by Far West Laboratory. This volume is available on microfiche from ERIC, except for Appendix A, the paper by John Warfield, ("Some Principles of Knowledge Organization", IEEE-SMC-9:6, 317-325.) which had been previously published and was removed by ERIC for copyright reasons.
