Demands of Complexity on Systems Science

Summary of why Warfield believes the newly developing discipline known as "Systems Science" can be brought to a fruitful, useful maturity. Displays a matrix showing the interrelations of the "17 Laws of Complexity." Reviews the distinction between "ordinary" and "complex" situations and asserts that an adequate Systems Science is not being used in modern higher education. Graduating students are, therefore, not equipped to deal with huge complexities. See also, “Demands OF COMPLEXITY on Systems Science: Presentation Components,” “Demands of Complexity on Systems Science (Chapter 14),” and “Demands of Complexity on Systems Science (Talk Outline).”

This paper, or a version with minor editing, is the same as the paper titled “Demands Imposed on Systems Science by Complexity” printed in the United Kingdom Systems Society proceedings. Also a third version appears as Chapter 14 in Warfield's book manuscript Work Program of Complexity. The paper is also a published in-book article in a 1995 Plenum Press book (Critical Issues… by Ellis, et al). In the Warfield Special Collection as the Plenary Address, the hard copy would be in Box 20, Folder 9. Warfield gave a plenary session address before the Systems Society on 14 July 1995 and this might have been a paper written for that talk and later published in the local society proceedings. But on the other hand it might be page numbering for of a collection of essays which John compiled himself after the conference was over. (R.w. July 24, 2013.)
