Although is it better known as MAY 1998 SHORT COURSE, the full title for this database item is: "The Demands of Complexity Meet the Killer Assumptions: Why Policy is Defective; Short Course - PUBP740 (850), The Institute of Public Policy, May 18, 1998." It was a George Mason University Short Course presented the week of May 18-22, 1998 for The Institute of Public Policy (TIPP), at Room 311, The Johnson Center, Fairfax, Virginia. A file folder of the course materials was sent to George Mason University and is now in Box 36, Folder 6 of Warfield Special Collection in Fenwick Library. It contains paper copies of most of the papers printed and distributed at the course. ANNOTATION: Much of the writings developed and used for this May short course were used again in lectures later in the year, first for Ford Motor Company in early July in Detroit, then in Beijing and in Shanghai in late July 1998, and lastly in the U.S. at GMU Institute Public Policy(TIPP) on 1 October 1998. We can't be sure how much was used at which location. Since this May 1998 short course lasted for five days the attendees got the lion's share of everything Warfield had to offer, and they were the first to get it. Cardenas was here for five days to assist in teaching this course, Warfield speaking all morning and she taking the afternoons for discussion and demonstrations of the topics covered. The file "May Short Course Report" written by Warfield as a report to TIPP Director Dr. Kingsley Haynes summarizes the themes of the daily lectures, gives names of attendees, and gives lists of handout materials and other references. What follows is an exact list of materials used, either as handouts to the class, or as references provided for their study:
