A Descriptive Analysis of Environmental Education

Describes for general audiences the several different interpretations of what is meant by Environmental Education. Discusses: (1) who is active in environmental education; (2)comparisons between formal and informal environmental education; (3) the normative model of environmental education and comparison of environmental education, as it exists, with the normative model; (4) the need for change strategies; (5) some potential change strategies; and (6) conclusions and recommendations. Written as part of a large environmental education project sponsored by the U.S. Office of Environmental Education. ANNOTATION: The main body of the report is 85 pages, and there are 60 pages of appendices. Available from ERIC Clearing house on microfiche. This report describes for general audiences the several different interpretations of what is meant by Environmental Education. It was written as part of a large environmental education project sponsored by the U.S. Office of Environmental Education, and headquartered at the University of Virginia under direction of J. N. Warfield. Walter J. Bogan, of U.S. Department of Health, Education & Welfare was the contract supervisor. In this report, Warfield reviewed all of the previous OEE grants and contracts, organizing and condensing the data, and placing it in categories based on the varying areas of interest and of study, and in general trying to make a coherent analysis of the whole Environmental Education system, as it existed at the time he was beginning his own contributions to the subject.
