Sent to GMU September 27, 2007. This is the ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT VERSION SUBMITTED TO SYSTEMS RESEARCH EDITORS IN MAY 2002. This version was not accepted. A revised version was accepted and published in Systems Res v 20, 2003 under the title A Proposal for Systems Science. Annotation written by Rose Warfield: , Warfield has developed a set of only FOUR categories which he proposes as a definition of the new field of “Systems Science.”- 1) Description of complex situations, 2) Design of solutions or improvements for complex situations, 3) The nature of Complexity, so that practitioners of his work can better understand what they are doing, 4) Methods for taking Action to apply solutions or improvements for complex situations. After a discussion of these four categories, the manuscript concludes with the presentation of a topically subdivided reference section, giving titles of about a hundred significant papers and books in a dozen separate subject areas. The topical subdivisions which Warfield used in the reference section are: REFERENCES for THE BASIC TRIAD OF SCIENCE REFERENCES for THE HUMAN COMPONENTOF THE BASIC TRIAD OF SCIENCE REFERENCES for THE LANGUAGE COMPONENTOF THE BASIC TRIAD OF SCIENCE REFERENCES for THE THOUGHT COMPONENTOF THE BASIC TRIAD OF SCIENCE REFERENCES for THE SCIENCE OF MODELING REFERENCES for THE MODELING QUALITY-CONTROL TRIAD REFERENCES for THE SCIENCE OF GENERIC DESIGN REFERENCES for THE SCIENCE OF COMPLEXITY REFERENCES for THE SCIENCE OF ACTION REFERENCES for SYSTEMS SCIENCE REFERENCES for SCIENTISM REFERENCES for EDUCATION.
In May 2002, at the time it was submitted to Systems Research & Behavioral Science, a copy of this paper (the original manuscript) was sent to the Special Collections department of Fenwick Library in May 2002, and is in Warfield Collection in Box 92, Folder 12 In October, 2002. Warfield received a message from Amanda Gregory, associate editor of Sys Res Journal, saying that they intended to publish this paper, "with minor revisions". The revisions requested included a CHANGE OF TITLE, to meet reviewer's demands. Further, in order to meet requirements from the journal publisher, Warfield had to totally revise the Reference Section. In Warfield's original manuscript the Reference Section had been divided by topical categories, but the publisher's style rules mandated that the reference section titles all be merged into a single list, and arranged alphabetically by author. Amanda Gregory did the revision of the reference section for Warfield, to avoid lengthy back and forth exchange of the manuscript. The title was also changed as requested so that effective October 2002 the paper IN ITS REVISED STATE was titled "A Proposal for Systems Science" and it was published under that title in Systems Research & Behavioral Science.
