Presenting the problem that `the mind does not have the power or means to assess or measure with any precision whether it is or is not engaged with complexity' and the resulting consequences in faulty human endeavors and judgements, this paper tries to describe and promote the Interactive Management program currently at George Mason University, which uses processes unique in the field of management & systems design. (Also in this folder a 3 1/2 page manuscript with the same title, dated 29 July 1987) Warfield's comments on this paper, written in his l987 manuscript "Integrative Sciences,..." FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPLEXITY "A paper in draft form, which follows Krippendorf's views on the locus of complexity, arguing that complexity is the dilemma presented to the mind when engaged in conceptualizations that are beyond its unaided powers. Known enhancers and detractors to human mental effectiveness are discussed, and several modes of attack in substantive areas are mentioned where significant enhancement is possible."
