This is a draft of a book which was in preparation at the time we left Charlottesville, in 1982. It is 225 pages, typed double-spaced, with many figures and tables. You can see that some parts of it were extracted and used for classes, or other publications, because Warfield's copying instructions are still there, as notes attached to sections of the master manuscript. He could have used this volume as class material for the Rodman Course he taught at University of Virginia, or for other lectures, given at the same time, when Ross Janes was in Virginia to see the book and read it and get his own copy. When we visited Ross Janes in London, in July 1999, he spoke of this book of Warfield's, saying he still had a copy of it and commenting on its value as a simple beginning introduction for someone wishing to understand the mathematics of structures, easier to understand than the more elaborate papers which came later. I did a page count of Ross's copy, copied the title page and table of contents and, took my notes home to compare with the similar title which I had remembered seeing on a shelf in in Warfield's office. I found Warfield's GRAPHICS LANGUAGE in a box where it had been sitting for at least 15 years. Ross had offered to make a photocopy of his book and send it to us, but I wrote and told him it wasn't necessary, since I had found Warfield's original. Warfield's boxed copy was essentially the same as Ross's note binder copy. There is one clean typed manuscript with cut and pasted figures and tables which was the original master. Warfield's letter written by Warfield to Mr. Simmonds, of the University Rodman Scholars committee shows that the manuscript was completed and ready for using in a classroom by 14 November 1979. Warfield's 14 November letter is inside an Accopress note binder holding a complete working copy of the book. This Accopress binder copy of the manuscript has handwritten additions and corrections. Another handwritten Accopress binder has more working papers and notes which Warfield made while working on this book.
Here are my summary notes on the book: Opening page is a quote from Peirce Title - A Graphics Language. Contents list 10 chapters, but in Ross's London copy, as well as in the two copies we had at the Virginia offices, the 10th chapter beginning on page 226 and titled Symbolic Modeling is missing. Possibly Warfield had not written it yet, and intended to do so later. Total pages = 225 Chapter 1, Maps - begins on page 1, Chapter 2, Structural Types of Maps - begins on page 37, Chapter 3, Text Components of Maps - begins on page 55, Chapter 4, The Arith Relationship - begins on page 80, Chapter 5, Common Elements and Concepts - begins on page 95, Chapter 6, Relationships - begins on page 117, Chapter 7, Connectives - begins on page 157, Chapter 8, Application Maps - begins on page 165, Chapter 9, Conceptual Design of Systems - begins on page 195, Chapter 10, Symbolic Modeling - begins on page 226 (listed in contents, but not found ).
