ANNOTATION: Declaring that the primary goal of higher education should be to prepare citizens for democracy, the author advocates an infrastructure which could support interactions between a re-defined three-part educational system consisting of a UNIVERSITY College, a PROFESSIONAL College, and a HORIZONS College. An appendix, titled "The Great University: Key Attributes" is on pages 14 and 15 of the report. Warfield prepared and displayed a large number of transparencies at this seminar, which lasted approximately 2 hours. Somewhere I have the list of those transparencies, but can't find it now, and I can't find any of the transparencies. Dr. Larry Bowen asked Warfield to give this talk for Bowen's GMU Seminar Series. Warfield presented the talk at Mason Hall, on the George Mason University campus, on 26 Oct 1995. Only three people came. They were Don Boileau, Anita Taylor, and Larry Bowen. Later Warfield mailed copies of the talk to faculty members who had told him they planned to attend but did not.
What follows is a bibliographic history of this paper. AN ESSAY ON COMPLEXITY Sent to several GMU faculty by campus mail more than a month ahead of time. Several copies of the paper were mailed on 9 Sept 1995 to faculty members at George Mason University, along with a letter stating "On Thursday, 26 Oct 1995, from 2 to 4 pm on the first floor of Mason Hall, I will be involved in a discussion of changes in higher education. This meeting was arranged by Dr. Larry Bowen. If you are interested in participating in this meeting, please so indicate to Larry. Attached is a paper titled 'An Essay on Complexity.' This paper furnishes part of the topical material to be discussed at the meeting" THE GREAT UNIVERSITY might or might not be the same text as the 9 September mailing, but now the article is dressed up as tape-bound IASIS monograph with an added cover and the new title: "The Great University: A George Mason University Seminar". About 20 or 25 of this monograph was printed, for use as audience handouts on the day of the talk, which was 26 Oct 1995. AN ESSAY ON COMPLEXITY - edw020, which we call Version 3, is quite different. The words "Great University" are deleted throughout. There is addition of Endnotes, of a table titled "Data Relevant to Indices of Complexity" and many revisions, including deletion of the title "Great University" and insertion of the first title "An Essay on Complexity." This Version 3 is formatted in double columns, as if for a publication, could this be what he sent to Bill Livingston? Version 3 was written about the same time as Warfield was writing his "Great University" seminar talk. It could be an entirely separate paper for a different audience, or it could have been the article mailed to faculty on 9 September. Warfield says he doesn't remember.
