George Mason University Johnson Center Lecture Series on Complexity, Lecture Group 1

This is Number 1 of a 3-volume set of IASIS Reports on a series of lectures given by John Warfield during the 1998 Fall Semester at George Mason University. The lectures dealt with the four topics which Warfield believed to be relevant to the subject of Complexity: Philosophy, Science, Applications, and Higher Education. Contains materials such as copies of transparencies and other printed information prepared as handouts for the lecture audience. See notes field for a list of the presentations in this group. See also, “Lecture Group 2” and “Lecture Group 3.”

Warfield presented three different lectures on each of the four topics, completing a series of 12 lectures between 14 September and14 December 1998, with guest lecturers for two of the series. LECTURE GROUP 1 (lectures 1 - 4 of the series) contains materials such as copies of transparencies and other printed information prepared as handouts for the lecture audience. The report covers the following presentations.

1) THOUGHT LEADERS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO UNDERSTANDING COMPLEXITY (Philosophy 1). Monday, September 14, 1998.

2) TWENTY LAWS OF COMPLEXITY (Science 1), Monday, September 28, 1998.

3) APPLICATIONS IN THE U. S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (Applications in Industry and Government 1) with A. N. Christakis, J. Carlston & M. Van Hoose. Monday, 5 October 1998

4) UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION IN THE USA (Implications for Higher Education 1) Monday, October 12, 1998

Lectures 3 and 4 of this group were videotaped. The videocassettes and are in Box 67 of the John N. Warfield Collection in Fenwick Library. The first two lectures, Number 1 and Number 2, were not filmed because Warfield had not planned on any videotapes of the series. However, after the lectures began Professor Ben Broome suggested videos and it was he who lined up the student video outfit which taped most of the lectures.
