This was an application in 1994 and again in 1995 for the Presidential Medal of Technology, which is awarded annually by the U. S. Department of Commerce. Henry Alberts was the one who thought of entering Warfield as a candidate for the Medal, and was the official Nominator. Henry and others signed the nomination and sent letters supporting it. However, Warfield was the one who had to fill out the application form and compile all sorts of biographical and professional documentation in order to complete it properly. It took a lot of time to do this, when he was very busy with other things. Warfield was not a winner in 1994, but he was a semi-finalist. Because of this, in January of 1995 the selection committee decided to continue his nomination for the 1995 competition. They asked for a few additional forms and documents in early 1995. In the end, after a long wait through most of the year 1995, we learned that Warfield did not win in 1995, either, so that was the end of it. The nomination document is worth saving because it is semi-autobiographical in nature, and has a lot of stuff written by Warfield in which he tried to explain his research and why he believed it important. In a series of Tables Warfield tried to portray in a nutshell the salient features of his professional life and the useful results of his work.
These tables are all included in the manuscript; I will give their titles here: Table 1 - INFORMATION ON AWARDS RECEIVED BY JOHN N. WARFIELD, Table 2 - HIGHER EDUCATION INFORMATION FOR JOHN N. WARFIELD, Table 3. EMPLOYMENT HISTORY OF JOHN N. WARFIELD (1968-1994), Table 4A. Also there were three appendices to the nomination documentation as follows; Appendix 1 - List of Selected Copyrighted Publications, Appendix 2 - Lessons Learned to be Shared, Appendix 3 - Spreadthink: Explaining Ineffective Groups. =========================
Warfield spent a lot of time filling out the forms and papers to meet the announcement specifications, then Henry signed and we drove down to U.S. Dept of Commerce building in the District to turn in the nomination form before the final deadline. The date was 17 Oct 1994. As to be expected in the busy center of Washington D.C. there was no place to park anywhere near the building, so John dropped me off in front of Commerce and circled the block while I went in and found the right office in the building to hand deliver the document to Mr. Paugh, or his secretary, really. A few weeks later I went shopping at Nordstrom's for some decent evening clothes just in case Warfield won and we had to dress up to go to a White House dinner. It didn't happen. But I got some nice new clothes that year. R.W., circa 2001 ----------- Below is a copy of the medal announcement which Henry Alberts downloaded to give to Warfield.
