A NASA Presentation The three-page manuscript is an outline of the talk, which was presented as an after-dinner speech at the Johnson Center, George Mason University, on 26 September 1996. The talk was sponsored by NASA as a part of their 23-26 Sept Workshop titled "A NASA Focus on Software Reuse." Topics in the manuscript: What is Philosophy?; What is design?; What issues derive from the intent to apply or implement a design?; What are design antecedents and design succedents?; How does scale enter into the construction of a design science?; How does structure enter into the construction of a generic design science?; What components are included in the Foundations of the science of generic design?; What are the proximity sciences?; What are the proximity technologies?; What is the maxim of balance in design activity?; What is the principal explanation of bad design? There was also a presentation page handed out at the talk: "A Philosophy of Design" questions list, on the topics in the manuscript, as listed above. Four transparencies were displayed at the talk: 1. Five Troublesome Ailments; 2. Formalisms as the Basis for Applying Science-First Example: Physics, Electricity; 3. Formalisms as the Basis for Applying Science-Second Example: Situational Definition; ) 4. Formalisms as the Basis for Applying Science-Third Example: Computation of Structure..
