As described by Warfield in an introduction page for the manual: "The particular units chosen here have a generic significance in that they can be used to learn material that is relevant to any problematic situation involving complexity. They are chosen primarily to emphasize the importance of careful delineation of relationships, to explain how to read structural models, and to help orient people as to what is required of a facilitator." In Warfield's office during the eighties it was nearly always Volume 2 containing the Programmed Teaching Units, which was asked for and used by visitors and students, because it included ideas which teachers could put to use. Warfield later grouped these four excerpts together for use as a manual in a Short Course on Complexity Science and Interactive Management which he taught for Phil Ernzen and PSOL students at George Mason University Johnson Center in February 1999. Titles of these four teaching units are:
pp. 71-82: Unit 12 - RELATION NEEDS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION;
pp. 101-114: Unit 17A - READING MAPS OF RELATIONS;
pp. 131-140: Unit 27 - METHODS OF COLLECTIVE INQUIRY;
pp. 141-152: Unit 32 - FACILITATOR ROLE IN EE.
Unfortunately Volume 1 of the Final Report appears in the ERIC database, but not Volume 2. ERIC reviewers did not print any information Volume 2. The only source for the original Volume 2 is Fenwick Library Warfield Collection C0016 Box 21 Folder 42 (in the University of Virginia Report Number: UVA/522032/EE80/127). Eventually John hired a typist to copy both volumes, and create a Microsoft Word document which can be found as the entire Final Report, Volumes 1 and 2, in a compendium printed by IASIS titled “EDUCATION PAPERS BY WARFIELD."
