In English, the title of this article is "A Course in Generic Design for Engineers." The paper is a course outline for a college-level class, based on courses in generic design for engineering students taught by Professor Warfield at the University of Virginia in the early 1980s. At first, this paper was at just a 10 page description of his Design course which Warfield had submitted to the U.S ASEE journal in Nov 1984. In 1985 at request of the ASEE editor, Warfield rewrote the 1984 paper and expanded it into a second version which was about 40 pages, so that it had become a broad course outline usable as a syllabus or teaching guide for a complete semester. Next the ASEE editors requested that the article be reduced in size. Rather than comply with the inconsistency of the editor, Warfield withdrew the paper and sent it to Gasparski in Poland, where it was translated into Polish and published in 1990 - all 40 pages. The translation from English to Polish was done under supervision of Prof. Dr. Wojciech Gasparski, editor of the Polish journal. In 1995 this same article was finally published in English, in Collen and Gasparski, Eds., Design and Systems, Univ. of Manchester Press. At George Mason University, the Polish language article is listed in the Warfield Collection Finding Aid as: Box 82 8 Projektowanie I Systemy Tomxi (Article p.28), WITHOUT A DATE, A corrected listing should read: Box 82 8 Projektowanie I Systemy XI (Article p.25) 1990 specifying publication date. Warfield also wrote and published another paper titled "Education in Generic Design" Proceedings SGSR,1986, which has some content similar to the Polish article, but is much shorter.
