A Science of Generic Design: Managing Complexity Through Systems Design (1990)

Representing Warfield's work and research over the previous two decades, this book is a study of the basic structure of human knowledge and how it can best be utilized to resolve complexity by the use of newly developed methodologies.

The First Edition of this book was published in two soft cover volumes in 1990. This was superseded in 1994 by a hard-cover edition from a different publisher as A Science of Generic Design: Managing Complexity Through Systems Design, 2nd Edition (1994)

Warfield finished the book in February 1989. It was submitted to GMU Press and sent out for review. GMU Press rejected the book.  While John was hunting for another publisher the May 1989 version was the one he passed around as a review copy most of the time.  For about a year there were PRE-PUBLICATION VERSIONS in circulation. At Fenwick Library, BOX 31 FOLDERS 24, 25 has the February 1989 unpublished draft. There was also an April 1990 version, a nice fresh printout of the book.  As far as I know, only the IASIS file has a printout in hard copy of the April 1990 draft of Science of Generic Design(John N. Warfield, 24 April 1990. xl, 610p spiral bound manuscript double spaced).

Intersystems Publlishers in Salinas, California published the April 1990 version. The published book is in GMU Library stacks, Call Number: Q175 .W278 Also the GMU Special Collections & Archives department has a copy, in the Faculty Author Collection. LCCN 90-81529. ISBN for first edition= 0-914105-49-1; LCCN=90-81529 Vol 1 pagination: xxl; 1 -276; B-1 - B12; IT-1 - IT-24; IN-1 - IN-8; IO-1 - IO-3; ID-1 - ID-4. The 1990 version of ASOGD, now out of print, was a 2-volume softcover edition. It was sent to the publisher as a one-volume manuscript of 610 pages, but the publisher split it into two volumes because his soft-cover binding could not support such a heavy book. Because it was a soft-cover edition, the book was supposed to be low in cost and thus more affordable for students, as well as persons in third world countries. It was supposed to be available for only $21.95. But before long Warfield discovered that the price had been increased, and furthermore, many people were having difficulties getting delivery of their purchases from this publisher. Eventually Warfield dismissed the publisher, obtained all of the remaining copies himself, stored them in his home and sold them at cost to persons who asked for a copy.

ASOGD-1990, Disks 1 and 2 In April, 1990, at the time the book went to the publisher, BEN BROOME SELECTED AND SAVED ON SEPARATE DISKS ALL OF THE FILES FROM JOHN'S BOOK WHICH CONTAINED THE TEXT. We are very grateful to Ben Broome for having the foresight to save these text files, since neither Warfield nor Rose Warfield had enough knowledge of Ventura to identify the text files and separate them ourselves, even if we had thought of doing it. In April 1990 Ben showed Rose the two little disks, saying they contained all of Warfield's book on just those two small floppies. His reason for the separate text files, he told Rose, was that the Ventura figure files were very large and difficult to combine with the text portions, while the text was valuable even without the figures, and easier to work with if in a separate package. At that time the small 3 ? inch disks were so new that most computers didn't have a disk bay to hold them and display their contents. It was pretty marvelous to learn you could get an entire manuscript into such a small space. Ben gave Rose a copy of those two disks, and now we still have them. It is the only complete text of the 1990 edition collected together in one place. There is no similar complete compact definitive collection of files for the 1994 edition (until the year 2003, when Warfield finally obtained good PDF COPY of the 1994 manuscript from Sir Speedy Printers, manager Jerry Schaeffer, in Largo, Florida, for the third edition of ASOGD) All of the 1990 edition chapters and appendices are here, as well as index, preface, bibliography, introduction. The book cover page and a few other miscellany did not convert well to WordPerfect, but most of the text is quite readable. Originally these files were Ventura 2.0 documents, but in this directory the text files are converted into WordPerfect8 and also into Microsoft Word.6 By the year 2000, ten years after the book was published, Ventura 2.0 has become obsolete, AND ALL VENTURA TEXT AND FIGURES ON OUR COMPUTERS ARE UNUSABLE. Warfield's entire ASOGD manuscript, whether 1990 or 1994 edition, is trapped in Ventura 2.0 files which we can not access. For a few years, it had not mattered very much, because, after all, the book had been published, in 1990 by Intersystems and in 1994, by Iowa State University Press. But Iowa State University discontinued publication of the book in the late nineties, and both editions of ASOGD are now of print. The only archive material is a 610 page hard copy manuscript which is difficult and expensive to photocopy for reprints, and which would be almost impossible to digitize without rewriting the text of the entire manuscript page by page. However, since we have these text files from Broome, the text is available and can be edited into a nice document, even if the files are still full of Ventura codes. [ Post note, written June 18, 2013 - I don't know where those three inch floppies are today. However there are piles of old floppies still unsorted, in boxes, so maybe they will turn up after all.
