Thought Leaders and Their Contributions to Understanding Complexity

Transparencies and other material to accompany “Complexity Lecture No. 1.” Dr. John N. Warfield discusses the state of higher education and a series of “Thought Leaders” who significantly influenced his thinking. Part of a series of 12 lectures on complexity given at the Johnson Center, George Mason University. First of three lectures on topic of Philosophy. Unlike others, this lecture was not filmed.

Hard copy of course materials and individual handouts for THE COMPLEXITY LECTURES were not sent to GMU, instead Warfield prepared three tape-bound reports, titled Lecture Groups 1, 2, and 3, which were shipped to Fenwick in 2000 and are in Box 36 of Warfield Special Collection. The Warfield Special Collection at Fenwick Library GMU has videotapes of MOST of the lectures.

This was Lecture No. 1 of the Johnson Center Lecture Series given during the 1998 Fall Semester at George Mason.  The folder which opens in the linked PATH field displays several document files, please note that the computer files <Handouts2Lecture1> and <Handouts1Lecture1> contain the transparencies used during the talk and printed in the handout given to the audience.

After the series of 12 Complexity Lectures was finished, copies of these papers went into a tape-bound report titled George Mason University Johnson Center Lecture Series on Complexity, Lecture Group 1. The report is in Box 36, Folder 9 of GMU's Warfield Collection at Fenwick Library. The lecture was NOT videotaped, because no videotaping had been planned, and none begun until Lecture No. 3 after Ben Broome suggested videos and lined up the student video outfit which taped most of the lectures. Manuscripts prepared for this talk are in four separate computer files located in the folder COMPLEXITY LECTURES HANDOUTS. *Readme for Complexity Lecture handouts folder: Doubtless some of those extra files in that PATH could be deleted, but I haven't had time as yet to go through them all and make sure what to keep and what to discard, so I just put them all in.  Throughout the semester as he was preparing for the lectures, Warfield pulled files from old cell packages, and old writings, and also made up new stuff, and compiled it all into the lecture of the moment. I tried to collect all of the computer files he used as handouts for each lecture. Sometimes he was pretty concise, sticking to just one document as a resource. Other times he dropped in references and photos from all over the place. I kept them separated by Lecture Handout numbers, but that does not necessarily mean all of them were used in the talk, or even printed as a part of the final three booklets with which he ended the course r.w. 3/01/2007, updated 2/21/2014
