Understanding Complexity: Presentation

Printouts of a slide lecture that proposes a definition and a measurement system for the true nature of complexity. Discusses the ideas of Friedman, Aristotle, Harary, De Morgan, Miller, Delbecq as precursors to Warfield's system of complexity metrics. Warfield's "Interactive Management" is proposed as the tool for determining the complexity of a situation. PowerPoint slides used in a classroom lecture at the University of Hull, England, as part of a summer school session provided by the University's Business School to students from ITESM, in Mexico, 2-6 July 2001.

Sent to GMU 27 September 2007. This is a series of 42 PowerPoint transparencies used in a classroom lecture at the University of Hull, England, on 6 July 2001, as part of a summer school session provided by the University's Business School to students from ITESM, in Mexico. Warfield prepared the slides in May, 2001, shortly before traveling to England, as part of his "Managing the Unmanageable" series of lectures. Hard copy printouts are in this folder. However persons wishing to see it on a computer screen, this digitized slide show is available on a compact disk being sent to GMU's Warfield Special Collection in the Fall of 2007. The CD is in A folder labeled: "MANAGING THE UNMANAGEABLE POWERPOINT SLIDE COLLECTION.” The slide lecture proposes a definition and a measurement system for the true nature of complexity. Ideas from Friedman, Aristotle, Harary, De Morgan, Miller, Delbecq are precursors to Warfield's system of complexity metrics as described in Staley's paper published in 1995 (See ID 20758 “Complexity Metrics of System Design”). Warfield's "Interactive Management" is proposed as the tool for determining the complexity of a situation. This lecture was planned by Warfield to be Number 25 in a series of videotapes to be called "Managing the Unmanageable." However, as of August 2001 the videotape for this lecture has not been made.
