The Work Program of Complexity Presentation

Talk that used the metaphors of oxygen and nitrogen as two domains of air, and of oxygen and hydrogen as two domains of water in an attempt to describe the distinctions between complexity and normalcy. Presented at INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering) meeting, Marriott Airport Hotel, Tampa, Florida, 2 February 2003. See also, “"Key Propositions Concerning the Future of Systems Engineering."

Sent to GMU 27 September 2007. The INCOSE presentation came about at the invitation of Mr. Jack Ring, from Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a member of INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering). Jack Ring asked Warfield to present a "work group" session as part of a larger INCOSE meeting at the Marriott Hotel. SEE ALSO the record in Textual Materials table titled: "Key Propositions Concerning the Future of Systems Engineering" The materials used were in three files all are on Rose's computer: 1) KEY PROPOSITIONS CONCERNING.doc- 2p manuscript 2) WPOC-INCOSErw.ppt - 31 PowerPoint slides –In this slide show THE WORK PROGRAM OF COMPLEXITY which he worked on 25 January 2003 Warfield uses the metaphors of oxygen and nitrogen as two domains of air, and of oxygen and hydrogen as two domains of water in trying to describe the distinctions between complexity and normalcy. (this slide show became number 66 of Warfield's Managing the Unmanageable series.) 3) BOOKPHOTOS.ppt - 1 page presented as a PowerPoint slide, showing scanned photos of book jackets of five books by Warfield, Societal Systems, 1976; A Science of Generic Design, 1990/1994; A Handbook of Interactive Management, 1994; Understanding Complexity: Thought and Behavior, 2002; and The Mathematics of Structure, 2003. (cover photo missing on the last book, because in print and bindery had not yet delivered it)

Due to many audience questions, the talk included more than the above materials, in fact Warfield was kept answering questions and talking for about 3 hours until they stopped for lunch. At the request of members of the audience, the slides and other parts of the talk presentation were to be shipped via email attachment to individuals in attendance who desired it. Mr. Ring, whose laptop computer was used for Warfield's CD-ROM talk, offered to do the mailing of the files, with Warfield's permission Jack must have kept copies of Warfield's slide presentation on his own laptop for years, I guess, because I find that I have a copy under the filename "IW03Lecture_WPOC.ppt" at the same time as another slide show titled "03SepIntellEntrprize.ppt" put together by Jack. Both PowerPoint slideshows were downloaded to my computer 20 October2013 from somewhere. My best guess is I spotted them both on the web somewhere and downloaded them both in 2013. Anyhow the file "IW03Lecture_WPOC .ppt" I downloaded in Oct 2013 is identical to the slide show "The Work Program of Complexity" which Warfield presented in Tampa, in Feb 2003. I put Jack's slide show in my BYOTHERS folder on the Dell.
