SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT IN THE FACE OF COMPLEXITY

Discussion of behavioral pathologies and the tendency for managers to underestimate their impact. The behavioral pathologies are identified as Individual, Group, and Organizational, depending on the ambient conditions under which they surface. They can, however, be avoided through proper planning.

GMU does not list this paper in Warfield Special Collections Finding Aids, but it DOES HAVE A DIGITAL COPY, on the DVD-2 a large collection of documents from John's computer which was shipped to Fenwick Library Special Collections on March 3, 2008. On the DVD and also on Warfield's home computer, the paper has the filename (dated 9 2006): 03-BEHAV-PATHOLSYST MGT IN FACE OF COMPL.pdf and Rose also has digital copy of the paper on her computer in the INVNRWJwpapers folder, listed by title (Systems Management in the Face of Complexity)

Abstract, written by Warfield:: "Far too many managers today are insensitive to the impact of behavioral pathologies on their ability to manage. These pathologies have been well-defined. They can be expressed as Individual, Group, and Organizational, depending on the ambient conditions under which they surface. Almost all of them can be circumvented by well-designed group processes. The wise manager will recognize the existence of cognitive walls, will not engage in the denial syndrome, and will seek appropriate methods management in the face of complexity"

This article is in a subsection of Warfield's computer in which he tried to sort Behavioral Pathology writings, and another article in that section titled Outline#!, dated 10 Oct. 2006, 2 or 3 pages in length is used as the beginning section of Systems Management in the Face of Complexity which is 15 pages altogether. The date 22 July 2007 is the earliest copy of this document I can find on old computer files from Warfield's computer, but the Outline#1 inserted into it was apparently written Oct 2006 or before.
