Book Review: Constraint Theory: Multidimensional Mathematical Model Management by George J. Friedman

Warfield’s review of George J. Friedman, Constraint Theory: Multidimensional Mathematical Model Management (New York: Springer, 2005). See notes field for Freidman’s response to review.

Warfield, as editor of IEEE: SMC journal in the sixties, had published Friedman's important first papers. This review written by Warfield about 40 years later must have been a great pleasure to write. Warfield completed his manuscript for the book review in June 2005 and sent a draft to George Friedman. George's response is copied below: Warfield's final book review manuscript containing George's suggestions, was published in 2006.

I only have two comments, representing less than 1% of your draft: Under your bullet "Computer Implementation", second sentence starting with "This is not a task that George Friedman could have expected to accomplish …" As I mentioned yesterday, I am already starting to program some of the critical processes of constraint theory. I suggest that you end that paragraph with this slight change: "George Friedman has started to program the main principles of constraint theory, but it remains for his successors, on the one hand to understand …etc." Next to last page, under your description of Appendix D, we are confronted with the "if and only if' logic again. I suggest you change: "…are always found .." to: " …are only found …". (a BNS is always within a circuit cluster, but not every circuit cluster contains a BNS.) Thank you again and warmest regards George.
