Warfield's Sherlock Holmes Opera

A folder containing mixed-media items including recordings of Warfield playing the piano and his unfinished lyrics for an operetta; he composed for fun.

Among other items in this folder one can find terribly bad audio recordings of Warfield playing the piano. He composed the words and lyrics for his "opera" just for fun. The dates for the lyrics are mostly 1979 and 1980, in Charlottesville, Virginia. The opera was never finished, but he did set little tunes to several of his lyrics, as a pastime. Warfield played the piano by ear. During the Charlottesville years an old tattered manila folder held the folder for the lyrics, which he would work on from time to time. The audio taping was done by Rose, usually without Warfield's knowledge. She sometimes turned on the small portable cassette recorder and left it running while Warfield plunked on the piano. We have audio tapes of the opera tunes. After 1980 he got too busy for a long time, and never returned to the task of finishing the music and the story line for the opera. When we moved to Annandale, our house had limited space upstairs so we had to put the piano in the basement, and neither of us ever played it again. We gave the piano to Nancy. In 2006 Warfield found yellowed old papers holding his opera lyrics. He transcribed the words to a computer document, but he never did find time from writing books and papers to do anything more with the music composition.
