This is the manuscript for Chapter 14 of the Handbook of Interactive Management by Warfield & Cardenas. It was often used by John in workshops and lectures, and was kept on his computer as a separate document with its own page numbering, to be readily accessible for printing handouts. Chapter 14 is an edited version of a technical report "Development of End-User Access Tools to the Science of Design: A Final Report to the Ford Motor Company Laboratories, January 1992" by Warfield and Cardenas. In the report, Japanese management and manufacturing methods are examined and compared with John Warfield's Interactive Management process, with the recommendation that in spite of the success of the Japanese management tools, Warfield's IM process was superior and should replace other methods. After submitting the 62 page technical report to Ford Research Laboratories, John revised the text for a general audience, giving it a new preface, removing specific references to Ford activities and personnel. The resulting manuscript was 41 or 42 pages, with the title "Comparing IM With Methods Widely Used in Japan," February 1992. In March 1992 The institute of Public Policy (TIPP) at George Mason University reprinted the report as a Working Paper under the title "Design and Manufacturing Methodologies" adding new prefaces and title page, but retaining all of the 41 or 42 pages from Warfield's manuscript. Eventually the report of February 1992 was published as Chapter 14 in the book A Handbook of Interactive Management Iowa State University Press, 1994. Chapter 14 in the 1994 Handbook is essentially the same text as the 1992 reports, differing only by title page and front matter plus minor editing changes. George Mason University has hard copy of all 4 versions. Warfield did not save four complete separate documents on his computer, but did save the title pages and front matter of the different issues of the same manuscript.
