Sent to GMU 23 Oct 2000. The January 1993 Math short course was videotaped and the ten videocassettes were shipped to Fenwick Library Special Collections, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA on 23 October 2000. The taping was a low-budget job, but at least you can hear most of it pretty well. There is no typed transcript of the video lectures. There is no hard copy or course outline or transparencies labelled as used exclusively for this course, although there was one at the time he gave the course. A manuscript titled “Mathematics of Modeling,” (filename buk004, is missing) consisting of excerpts from the math chapters of Societal Systems, with updates, was the basic manual, but a lot of extra materials were also used. Since Warfield taught several Math of Modelling courses, the course material for each new one came from the files of papers used for the previous one. Transparencies, etc, for this and all the other Mathematics of Modelling courses are now stored together, in the TEACHING FILE CABINET. At one time I tried to keep separate note-binders for each Math course, but it got beyond me. For example. Warfield took the January 1993 course material to Mexico in June 1993 when he gave his 3rd Math of Modeling short course. Also in May 2000, he taught a 4th Math of Modelling short course, for ITESM faculty in Monterrey, Mexico. In between times, he gave other short courses and lectures, in which portions of the Math of Modeling materials were used as reference papers for the students. Also he gave specific lectures on the subject during his Fall 1998 Complexity Lectures and his Spring 1999 Seminar classes. In addition one of the Managing the Unmanageable video lectures filmed in June 2000 was prepared from rewrites of his Math of Modeling materials. In the course of things most of the Mathematics of Modeling hard copy is now hopelessly mixed up, since Warfield was continually riffling the drawers to get stuff out for another course before I had time to grab it and make a master copy. As a final thought, several documents on the Math coursework might still exist at Arizona State University in Hayden Library, as part of Warfield’s year 2000 donation to the Special Collections department there. I recall we packed one entire box for shipping, with nothing except Math of Modeling documents and short course materials of one sort or another.
